ST MARY MAGALENE
(22 July)
ST MARY MAGDALENE
'Mary Magdalene has been identified (probably mistakenly) with the repentant sinner who anointed Jesus' feet (Luke 7:36-50) and with the sister of Martha of Bethany. What is more certain is that Jesus cured her of possession by seven demons, that she was present at the crucifixion and burial, and that she was a principal witness to the resurrection. In the gospels of Mark and John she is the first one to see the risen Christ.'

PRAYER OF THE DAY (COLLECT)
Traditional
Almighty God,
since you have given us your only Son
as both a sacrifice for sin
and an example of a godly life:
Give us grace that we may always
thankfully receive this great benefit
and also daily strive
to follow in the steps of his life;
through your Son,
Jesus Christ our Lord,
who lives and reigns
with you and the Holy Spirit,
one God, now and forever.
Amen.
OR, modernised traditional
Almighty God,
you have given us your only Son
both as a sacrifice for sin
and as an example of godly life.
Help us, in your loving kindness,
thankfully to receive this great gift
and also to strive each day
to follow in the steps of his holy life.
For he lives and reigns
with you and the Holy Spirit,
one God, now and forever.
Amen.
OR, alternative
Almighty God,
your Son restored Mary Magdalene
to health in mind and body
and called her to be a witness
to his resurrection.
Cleanse and make us new
through your loving kindness,
and lead us to serve you
in the power of his risen life.
For he lives and reigns
with you and the Holy Spirit,
one God, now and forever.
Amen.
