DRAMA — SERIES A — CHRISTMAS, Proper I

Bible reference - Isaiah 9:2–7

ISAIAH SPEAKS

(This drama is in the form of a monologue spoken by Isaiah. Isaiah enters in biblical costume.)

Let me introduce myself.

The name’s Isaiah.

Isaiah the son of Amoz, to be precise, prophet, travelling preacher and all-purpose soothsayer.

Now, I know what you’re thinking.

‘What’s he doing here?’ Right?!

‘It’s nearly three thousand years since he first got around, he ought to be dead, buried and in heaven.’ Right!

Well, the truth is that God’s got a message for you tonight, and so this old soothsayer has one more sooth to say before he lays down his staff for good.

Here goes: ‘The people walking in darkness have seen a great light; on those living in the darkness of the shadow of death a light has dawned. For unto us a child is born, unto us a son is given, and the government will be upon his shoulders. And he will be called Wonderful Counsellor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.’

Well, what do you think? It’s a top message, isn’t it?

I remember when I first told people about this special child so long ago. Boy, people needed to hear about him back then.

Things looked hopeless. Life was a real burden. It seemed like everyone was under a huge black cloud of some kind, some kind of spiritual darkness, you might say.

Just like today. So much doom and gloom around the place. Things going from bad to worse. People getting oppressed and blinded by it all.

Well, there’s no doom and gloom from God this year. No way.

He says there’s light for people who walk in darkness. He says that there’s someone who sets things right again.

He says, ‘To us a child is born, to us a son is given’.

Not any old child, not any old son, but the Son of God, a kid come straight from heaven.

A child filled with the promise of peace and strength and safety.

A child come to us.

I know you’ve heard all this before. Maybe every year for as long as you can remember. But let me ask you: Have you really heard it?

I mean, have you listened to it in your heart of hearts, where it really matters?

Have you heard it in the dark places of your life? Have you let it light them up? Have you heard it in the tender places of your soul and let the child bring healing? Have you heard it in the parts of your life that are in turmoil and let it bring peace?

Has the news sunk in that this child is a gift given to you, given in order to change your life, to make a difference to you? To you? To you, and to you? (Points to people in congregation)

Well, I can’t put it any simpler than that, and I hope you’ve heard me. All I can say now is, take some time to think about it. Chew it over.

And remember, ‘Unto us a child is born’.
