DRAMA — SERIES A — 5  EPIPHANY

Bible reference - Matthew 5:14–16

THE COLOURS OF THE RAINBOW

Characters: Narrator and seven non-speaking roles

(Narrator and seven actors enter and take up positions. The actors are dressed/draped in the seven colours of the rainbow and stand in the appropriate order.)

NARRATOR:        After the rainbow was created, it was revealed by Blue

That the other colours clashed with his/her royal hue.

(Blue gets out a crown which has been hidden behind back, puts it on, looks scornfully at                        the other colours)

‘Leave me alone’, proud Blue sulked to the others,

(Blue walks away from the others, dismissing them with wave of the hand)

‘I no longer need you, my dull, lifeless brothers.’

(Blue crosses arms and stands with nose in the air to one side of the stage, other                                        colours shake their heads and roll their eyes)

So Red, and Yellow, Orange and Green,

Indigo and Violet felt quite lean.

(The remaining colours look at each other and shuffle together to fill Blue’s space)

While their colours still shone bright and fair

They really didn’t feel that they were quite all there.

(Colours yawn and mime falling asleep)

Then Yellow awoke late one night

(Yellow yawns, stretches and looks around...)

And noticed Orange was not that bright.

(...and notices Orange, who is still sleeping, and looks shocked)

‘What gift do you bring?’ Yellow boldly demanded.

(Wakes Orange up roughly, Orange looks confused)

‘Out you must go!’ he coldly commanded.

(Pushes Orange away and dusts off hands, Orange finishes up on the opposite side of                                the stage  to Blue and stands there hunched over looking sad and rejected)

So Violet, Indigo, Green, Yellow and Red

(Colours shuffle together again to fill Orange’s space)

Displayed their colours, quite boldly it’s said.

              But something was missing, Blue...(Pause)

(Blue looks back over shoulder at others and dismisses them all with a snort of disgust)

And Orange too, I think. (Pause)

(Orange sighs loudly and looks miserable)

It seemed as though the rainbow was going down the sink!

(Sound effect of a gurgling sink, colours look around for origin of noise)

The very next day, Jealousy came to town,

And Green looked at the others with a great big frown.

(Green sneaks sideways glances at the others, frowning)

‘Red, you’re so bright, Violet— purple and true,

(Green confronts Red and Violet as they are mentioned, pointing at Red and poking                                Violet in the chest)

My colour seems so lifeless when seen near you.’

(Stamps off to centre front of stage, sits down pouting)

Day after day all the colours did was fight.

(A fight erupts between the remaining four colours, and continues)

It seemed, by and by, that nothing was right.

The colours of the rainbow, to give hope after rain,

gave the Creator’s promise a really bad name.

Well, late one day, after an almighty fight,

              the Creator came, (Pause)

              (The colours fighting all freeze)

              looking quite brilliantly bright.

(All colours look up and have to shade their eyes)

‘What in heavens were you doing?’ their Lord and Maker asked.

(All colours look guilty and look at the ground)

‘Your behaviour is awful, don’t you know you have a task?

              (All colours nod)

‘When I placed you, a towering promise in the sky,

I arranged you together, so that people would sigh.

Your colours don’t distract, fracture or lose.

If I’ve placed you there, it’s because of your hues.

‘You need each other, let that be understood.

(Colours look at each other guiltily)

I’ve put you all in the best order for the common good.

When you unite, and shine with each other, I declare,

you’ll be my witness to all people everywhere.’

When the colours of the rainbow heard these words of the Creator,

(Fighting colours shake hands and hug)

they knew that while each was different, none of them was greater!

(Yellow goes to get Orange and bring him/her back, Red and Violet go and get Green)

Upon reflecting on the purpose of their very creation,

(Other colours all beckon for Blue to join them)

They gladly harmonised and shone in bold acclamation.

(Blue hesitantly joins them. The others welcome him/her.)

So when you look into the sky and seen these colours so true,

(Narrator looks significantly at colours who quickly get into their proper order again and                        stand there smiling)

Remember this story, and that you can shine too.

It doesn’t matter what gift you can, or cannot, bring,

For God himself has blessed you with the colour you’re in.

(Narrator exits, followed by the colours in order)
