DRAMA—14TH SUNDAY AFTER PENTECOST, YEAR A

Proper 17, 1999     Bible reference: Romans 12:9–21

THE FIGHT

CHARACTERS: Narrator, brother, sister, Mum.

PROPS: Bible.

(The lines should flow smoothly. Avoid using a sing-song rhyming style. The fight should be carefully rehearsed so that no one actually gets hurt. The narrator enters and takes up position. Brother and sister enter from opposite sides of the stage and walk towards the centre)

NARRATOR:

My sister bumped me in the hall, (Sister bumps brother)

so I pushed her, made her fall. (Brother pushes sister over)

She yelled and kicked me on the leg, (Sister kicks brother’s leg)

so then I punched her in the head. (Brother punches sister in head)

My sister cried. (Sister sits on ground crying)

BROTHER:

‘Shut up!’

NARRATOR:

I said.

BROTHER:

(Trying to quieten sister down) ‘If Mum hears us, we’ll both be dead!’

NARRATOR:

But Mum did hear, I knew she would.  (Mum enters looking cross, sister stands) We both looked as innocent as we could. (Both try to look innocent)

MUM:

(Crossly) ‘What’s happened here?’

NARRATOR:

She said to us.

My sister cried, (Sister starts crying again) she always does.

BROTHER:

(Pointing at sister) ‘She started it!’

NARRATOR:

I said.  Mum frowned. (Mum frowns at brother)

SISTER:

(Pointing at brother) ‘He started it, he pushed me down!’

BROTHER:

Did not!

SISTER:

Did too!

BROTHER:

Did not!

SISTER:

Did too!

MUM:

(Stepping between them and yelling) ‘Be quiet!’

NARRATOR:

Mum roared.

MUM:

‘I’m sick of you.

All this fighting has to cease.

Now say you’re sorry, make your peace’

NARRATOR:

I glared at my sister, and she glared at me. (Children glare at each other, Mum looks from one to the other in frustration)

She poked out her tongue when Mum couldn’t see. (Sister pokes tongue out while Mum is looking at brother)

      We both said:

CHILDREN:

(Angrily) ‘I’m sorry’

NARRATOR:

In an angry voice.

I didn’t want to, but I had no choice.

I went to my room and slammed the door.

(Brother and sister storm off to opposite sides of stage and stand with backs to each other. Mum exits)

I rubbed my leg where it was sore. (Brother rubs leg, sister rubs head)

      I wondered, then, how my sister felt;

after all, I gave her quite a belt! (Sister sits down miserably with head in hands)

I could hear her crying on the bed. (Brother glances round at sister, then away)

I should’ve felt happy, but felt bad instead.

We hadn’t made peace like Mum had said.

I opened my Bible up and read (Picks up Bible and reads it)

about living in peace with one another.

      It’s in Romans 12 you’ll discover.

I felt really guilty (Glances guiltily at sister, then puts down Bible)

I knocked on her door. (Goes over to sister)

BROTHER:

‘I’m sorry’,

NARRATOR:

I said.

BROTHER:

‘Hope you’re not too sore.’

NARRATOR:

She opened her door and looked at me. (Sister looks up at brother)

SISTER:

‘I’m sorry too. Hey, how’s your knee?’ (Holds out hand, brother helps her up)

NARRATOR:

So we made peace then, like we should. (Brother and sister hug each other)

And you know something? It felt good! (Both exit)
