DRAMA—FOURTH SUNDAY OF ADVENT, YEAR B

Bible reference: Luke 1:26-38

JUST A SIMPLE GIRL

(Mary enters dressed in biblical clothes. She talks to God)

Lord, I don’t understand what’s going on. This is all so hard. I’m just a simple girl, betrothed to be married to a good, honest and hardworking man. Now you say that I’m to have a son. Yet I remain a virgin. How can this be? I’m filled with wonder and confusion.

(Places hand on stomach, looking down at it) I can imagine the baby growing in my womb already and the joy I feel at becoming a mother fills me so, (Excited) I want to shout the news to the whole world!

(Suddenly worried) But what of Joseph?

(Remembering) I was so nervous about telling him. How do you tell the man you’re to marry that you’re pregnant? Would he believe me? Would he understand? Would he accept me?

Yet when the time came to tell Joseph of the angel’s visit, I was suddenly at peace. The words came easily. I worried no longer for my sake but...(Look of pain on her face) Oh, I hurt for Joseph. He looked so...betrayed, and I must say, shocked. It would’ve been the last thing he’d have expected me to say.

(Pacing) I know he’ll be worried sick over what he should do now. He had everything so carefully planned, including our trip to Bethlehem. What will he do now?

(Stops pacing, looking up) Please, Lord, come to him as you did me. Reassure him that your hand is in this, that you are the master of our destiny together... (Hand on stomach) and the baby we are to raise is yours. I don’t understand any of this, Lord. But I do believe. (Exit)
