DRAMA—ASCENSION, YEAR B
Bible reference: Acts 1:6-11
DON'T LOOK UP!
CHARACTERS: Person, at least three ‘lookers’, beggar, street kid, sick woman and young child. (More could be included if desired.)
Three (or more if desired) people enter and stand with their backs to the audience looking up at the sky intently. They are oblivious to anything else around them, but occasionally glance at or nod to each other, as if to reassure themselves about what they are looking at.
Eventually a beggar walks in and wanders up to them trying to get their attention. They afford him a bit of a glance and then ignore him. He continues to ask them for money, but finally leaves sadly, wandering over to the side of the stage area and sitting down, head in hands.
After a while a young street kid comes in and tries to get the attention of the lookers. They are not interested at all, only in what they are looking up at. He/she moves away to a corner of the stage area and stands hunched over and shivering.
Next comes a very sick woman, with a baby or young child, who is coughing badly. She tries to get them to help her. They are too busy looking up to notice her and eventually she moves away, but collapses on the ground.
(Depending on time and the number of actors available, this type of scenario can be repeated a few more times.)
A person enters and stands back a little, observing the ‘lookers’. Eventually he/she speaks.
PERSON:

Hi! What are you guys looking at? (When there is no answer, the person walks over to the ‘lookers’ and gets their attention) Hey, what's going on here? (Looks up at the sky to see what they're looking at. The ‘lookers’ turn to him/her and one of them speaks)

LOOKER:
|
Oh, didn't you know? Jesus has gone. (Pointing) He's up there.
|
PERSON:
|
(Looking around with a slightly surprised expression) No, no, he's not... He's here! (Points to the beggar, the street kid, the woman etc. Person exits. Others freeze, the lookers looking stunned, then exit. )
