DRAMA—ASH WEDNESDAY, YEAR B

Bible reference: Matthew 6:19-21

WHAT DO YOU REALLY WANT?

CHARACTERS: Megan, Tony and Ashley, plus Voice

PROPS:        Three stools

(Megan, Ashley and Tony enter and sit on three stools spaced widely across stage)

VOICE:

What do you really want?

MEGAN:

I just want to have fun! I also want to be married to a nice man who will look after me and be a good father to my children. I want to have financial freedom too!

TONY:

I want to be powerful and in control.

ASHLEY:

I just want to be really happy.

MEGAN:

I want two kids that will grow up to be smart and responsible citizens. I want the best schools with the best facilities and the best education for them, so they do me proud. I want my kids to be really well behaved and give me presents on Mother's Day!

TONY:

I want to have a really modern house, with a shed—a bloke's gotta have a shed! Position, position, position, of course; it needs to be a sound        financial investment. I also want a 4-wheel-drive for the weekend fishing        trips with me mates, and shares in AMP.

ASHLEY:

I just want to be really happy. And confident. I think.

MEGAN:

I want to feel really content. I want to have it all, husband, children, home,        career, great girlfriends. Oh! And a community service medal!

TONY:

I want money, enough to keep me in the style to which I've become        accustomed, of course. I want a job that pays well and has plenty of fringe benefits. I also want an accountant who's not afraid to wangle some tax perks!

ASHLEY:

I just want to be happy!

VOICE:

Just what is 'happy' exactly?

MEGAN:

It's having it all. It's being content and secure in yourself, it's being loved        and protected by the right man. It's having fun and being yourself.

TONY:

It's about being in control. It's about having power over your life. It's about financial security and the occasional fishing trip with the mates. A bloke needs mates! Can't be in the wife's pocket every weekend!

ASHLEY:

(Looks at others) So, if you can have all that, then you would be happy?       (Goes to Megan) Are you happy?

MEGAN:

(Confused) I, I don't know!

ASHLEY:

(Goes to Tony) And what about you, are you happy? Really happy?

TONY:

Dunno, I might be if I could get away this weekend!

ASHLEY:

Nuh! You guys aren't happy! (Points accusingly at Megan) Megan, you        take those little blue pills all the time, you're a crank-pot without them!       (Points accusingly at Tony) Tony, you only go fishing to drown in alcohol! You're a binge drinker and you're obsessed about every occasion you can get to get blind with the mates! Me! I'm not happy either, I'm a communication skills course addict but I still don't feel confident! (Throws up hands in despair) So, what really is happy?

MEGAN:

I...I wouldn't know! I don't even know what I really want. I just feel like I        want more...

TONY:

I don't really know either! I don't know what I want for sure... It's something, I know it's out there, but I can't see it.

ASHLEY:

I want something too! It's more than being happy and confident. It's        something beyond me, myself, something deeper, and much more real than anything we've said before. It's like I want something I actually need, deep down inside me.

TONY:

(Catching on) Yeah, I know! In your gut, way down deep in your gut!

MEGAN:

In your soul?

ASHLEY:

Yes! That's it! In my soul! I want what I need in my soul! I wonder what        that would be? (Exit)
