DRAMA—THIRD SUNDAY OF EASTER, YEAR B

Bible reference: Acts 3:12-19

IT HAD TO BE A TRICK

CHARACTERS: Two people. Person 2 should be male.

PROPS: Park bench, newspaper.

(1 is sitting on a park bench reading the paper, 2 sits down beside him/her. 1 snorts in disgust and starts making comments under his/her breath)

1:

(Reading paper) Huh! Yeah, right! Sure!

2:

(Curiously) Interesting article?

1:

(Thrusts paper under 2's nose) Just get a load of this. 'Crippled man        miraculously healed', it says. What a load of rubbish! It was probably just some        kind of trick.

2:

What do you mean?

1:

He was probably just faking it.

2:

No, he wasn't, he was born a cripple. Been begging at the gate of the temple        ever since he was old enough.

1:

Well, then, he probably had a twin hidden away somewhere, and they just did a        quick swap.

2:

No, he didn't have a twin.

1:

(Suspicious) How do you know?

2:

I know the family fairly well.

1:

(Not giving up easily) Then it had to done with mirrors or strings or something.

2:

Nope, I was there. It really happened.

1:

But there must've been some trick to it. I know, what about mass hypnosis?

2:

(Incredulous) Of a couple of hundred people scattered all over the temple? I        don't think so!

1:

Well, you tell me how they did it then, smartypants!

2:

It was a miracle.

1:

(Scornfully) A miracle! That's your answer? Ordinary people like this... um... (Peers at article) Peter and John don't do miracles!

2:

They do if they know the right person.

1:

So who's the right person?

2:

Jesus. It was his power that healed the man.

1:

Jesus' power? But Jesus is dead! They crucified him!

2:

No, he's alive again. He even has power over death!

1:

(Triumphantly) Aha! Then it had to be a trick!

2:

Why?

1:

Who'd waste that kind of power on a beggar? Why would they even want to        heal that loser? They should be healing more important people, like me and        you. I've had trouble with indigestion for years, probably too much        rich food. I bet the beggar never have that problem!

2:

(Rolling eyes) I'm sure he didn't!

1:

And you look decent enough, but who cares what happens to some worthless,        crippled beggar?

2:

Jesus cares, and Peter and John cared. And it's wonderful that they did, otherwise I'd still be sitting outside that gate. (2 exits. 1 watches him leave in amazement)
