DRAMA—EASTER EVENING, YEAR B

Bible reference Luke: 24:13-49

AT THE CRIME SCENE

CHARACTERS: Voice, reporter, detective, forensic pathologist, at least two non-speaking policemen, disciple.

PROPS: Tomb or tomb backdrop, yellow tape labelled Crime Scene, white cloth, doughnut, notebook, glasses, clipboard, magnifying glass,        camera, powder and brush for fingerprints.

(This scene takes place at Jesus' tomb. There is a lot of yellow crime scene tape around, and a pile of neatly folded white cloth. The detective, forensic pathologist and a couple of police are busily examining the scene for evidence. The detective is wearing a big coat and directing the police. He/she is eating a doughnut and jotting details down in a notebook. The forensic pathologist is wearing glasses and a white coat and carrying a clipboard. He/she is examining the cloth with a magnifying glass. A policeman/woman is taking photos, another is dusting for fingerprints. Reporter enters with microphone.)

VOICE:

And now we cross live to the crime scene at the tomb from which the body of Jesus of Nazareth has mysteriously vanished.

REPORTER:

(Hand to ear as if listening through earphone) Thanks, Nicky/Nick. (To camera) As you can see, it's crazy down here, there are reporters everywhere. Police detectives, photographers, fingerprint experts and forensics are going over every inch of the place with a fine-tooth comb. (Goes to detective who just happens to be nearby taking a large mouthful of doughnut) Excuse me sir/madam, can you tell me if there have been any new developments in this puzzling case?

DETECTIVE:

(Frantically tries to finish mouthful of doughnut, finally swallows it) At this stage it's too early to tell. (Consults notebook, ticks off items as he mentions them) We're gathering evidence, searching for clues, taking photos, dusting for fingerprints, making plaster casts of footprints, taking statements, investigating several leads, and interviewing suspects. We'll find that body, but at this stage we have no further comment to make.

REPORTER:

What about the rumours of a resurrection miracle?

DETECTIVE:

REPORTER:

What about all the prophecies of a Messiah?

DETECTIVE:

REPORTER:

Do you suspect extra-terrestrial involvement?

DETECTIVE:

No comment!! (Goes back to crime scene to check on police)

REPORTER:

(Talking to the forensic expert who happens to be nearby) Excuse me, sir/madam, you're the forensic expert on this case, what can you tell me about the burial linen that was left in the tomb?

FORENSIC:

(Consults clipboard) Well, from the scientific data we can tell you that it was positively, absolutely, definitely used to wrap a dead body. (Reporter rolls eyes at the audience) Blood and tissue and hair samples from the linen and Jesus' cross have been sent to the lab for analysis and cross-matching. We've taken scrapings from under the fingernails of the guards and Jesus' followers and sent those to the lab to check for residual microscopic particles of the linen. And we've taken        photographs of it from every angle. (Shows reporter photo) Here, this is a good one (Points) That's me. Do you want to know how to spell my name?

REPORTER:

No... er... thank you. (Forensic expert goes back to crime scene disappointed,        reporter speaks to camera) So as you can see, viewers, the experts are searching for evidence to prove, beyond reasonable doubt, just what has happened to the body of Jesus of Nazareth.

DISCIPLE:

(Has entered earlier and been listening, interrupts) I know what's happened to Jesus. They won't find his body anywhere because he's alive!

ALL:

What? (Disciple starts to exit, others follow calling after him)

REPORTER:

But where's the proof?

DETECTIVE:

Where's the evidence?

FORENSIC:

Where's the scientific data?

DISCIPLE:

(Stops and turns to face them) I've just been talking to him! (Exits, others follow)
