DRAMA—EIGHTH SUNDAY AFTER EPIPHANY, YEAR B

Bible reference: Mark 2:13-17

FOR THE SINNERS

(1 and 2 enter and stand about two metres apart. 1 looks really smug, 2 is a picture of misery. Jesus enters and stands between them)

JESUS:

(To 1) Follow me.

1:

(Smugly confident) Of course, but I already follow you, Jesus.

JESUS:

(Turns to 2) Follow me.

1:

(Doesn’t realise Jesus is no longer talking to him/her, addresses audience, Jesus stays turned towards 2) Been a Christian for years!

2:

(Ashamed) But I’m a sinner.

1:

(Smugly) I’m a good person, unlike some I could name...

2:

I’m worthless scum.

1:

I go to church every Sunday.

2:

(Sinks to knees in despair) I’ve done so many rotten things!

1:

I give to charities and...(Notices Jesus is no longer listening and taps him on shoulder) Hey, why aren’t you listening to me? (Jesus turns towards 1, who        points accusingly at 2) Why are you spending time with that worthless sinner?

JESUS:

Healthy people don’t need a doctor, but the sick do. (Goes to turn back to 2)

2:

(Crying out) Save me!

1:

(Holding up finger, trying to get Jesus’ attention) Well, I’ve got a sore finger.

2:

(Desperately) I’m dying!

1:

(Shoving finger in Jesus’ face) It really hurts!

2:

Save me!

1:

I think I sprained it.

2:

I’m dying!

1:

Pointing out the faults in others.

JESUS:

(To 1) I haven’t come to call good people, (Indicates 2) I’ve come for the sinners.

2:

(Grabs Jesus’ hand) Save me!

1:

(Grabs Jesus’ other arm) But what about me?

2:

(Pulling Jesus towards him/her) Save me!

1:

(Pulls Jesus back) No! I’m the one you should be looking after!

2:

(Stands pulling Jesus towards him/her) Save me!

1:

(Pulls Jesus back, turning it into a real tug-of-war ) I’ve served you for all these years! (1 and 2 stretch Jesus’ arms out to look like a crucifix as they continue to pull him in both directions)

2:

Save me!

1:

No, me!

2:

Save me!

1:

No, me!

2:

Save me!

1:

No, me!

2:

(To 1) But I’m dying!

1:

(To 2) Oh, go to hell! (Both stop pulling Jesus, who remains in crucifix pose. 2 looks at 1 in total despair, then sinks to knees, face covered with hands. 1 is horrified) Oh, no! What have I done? How could I say that? (Sinks to knees, looking up at Jesus in remorse) I’m so sorry, Lord, I’m so sorry. (Covers face with hands in same pose as 2. Jesus puts his hand on 1’s shoulder. 1 looks up at him)

JESUS:

(Smiles at 1) I haven’t come to call good people, I’ve come for the sinners. (Looks significantly at 2 and back at 1. 1 tentatively offers 2 his/her hand. 2 takes it. Jesus puts his other hand on 2’s shoulder as they both kneel in front of him looking up at him. Jesus helps them both up and they all walk off with Jesus’ arms around them)
