1:

It was just before the Passover feast.

2:

It was just before the swearing in of the new Prime Minister.

1:

It was traditional that all should be gathered together.

2:

It was tradition that the King be present at the ceremony.

1:

The evening meal was being served.

2:

The ceremonial feast was under way.

1:

Suddenly Jesus got up from the meal.

2:

Suddenly the King got up from his throne.

1:

He took off his outer clothing.

2:

He took off his crown and royal cloak.

1:

He wrapped a towel around his waist.

2:

He put on overalls and work boots.

1:

The disciples wondered what was going on.

2:

The crowd began to stare at the King who was behaving quite strangely.

1:

He poured water into a basin.

2:

He excused himself from the function and went out into the streets.

1:

He began to wash the disciples' feet.

2:

He began to chat to people and help them with their jobs. He emptied rubbish        bins. He worked on cars. He changed nappies for tired mothers. He weeded        gardens.

1:

All the disciples felt very awkward.

2:

All the citizens felt very awkward.

1:

He came to Simon Peter.

2:

He came to the Prime Minister.

1:

Are you going to wash MY feet?

2:

Are you going to weed MY garden too?

1:

You'll understand later, said Jesus.

2:

You'll understand later, said the King.

1:

Don't you dare wash my feet! said Peter.

2:

Don't you dare weed my garden and empty my rubbish! said the Prime        Minister.

1:

Unless I wash you, you will have no part with me.

2:

Unless I weed and clean for you, you won't have my support.

1:

Then not just my feet, but my head and hands as well!

2:

Then not just my garden, but my farm and block as well!

1:

And Jesus washed Peter's feet.

2:

And the King weeded the Prime Minister's garden.

1:

Do you understand what I have done for you?

2:

Do you understand what I have done for you?

1:

You call me Teacher and Lord, and rightly so, for that is what I am.

2:

You call me Your Majesty and Your Excellency, and rightly so, for that is        what I am.

1:

But now  that I have washed your feet, you should wash one another's feet.

2:

But now that I have worked for you, you must work for all the people you        govern.

1:

I have set you an example.

2:

I have set you an example.

1:

No servant is greater than his master.

2:

No servant is greater than his master.

1:

I have been a servant to you; now go and serve others.

2:

I have been a servant to you; now go and serve others.

1:

You will be blessed if you do.

2:

You will be blessed if you do. (Both exit)
