DRAMA—MONDAY IN HOLY WEEK, YEAR B

Bible reference: Hebrews 9:11-15

JUST A LOAD OF GARBAGE

CHARACTERS: Three speaking parts and a person to wheel the wheelie bin in.

PROPS: Large wheelie rubbish bin, large cross.

(Person wearing dressing gown, fluffy slippers etc enters with a wheelie bin. The bin is wheeled to the centre of the stage area. Groans are heard coming from the bin. They grow steadily louder)

1:

(Standing up in audience) Where's that noise coming from?

2:

(From other side of room) It's coming from that bin! (1 and 2 approach bin, 1        kicks it)

3:

(Inside bin) Hey!

1:

(To 2) I think there's someone in there.

3:

(Opens lid and snaps) Of course there's someone in here! (Closes lid, 2        knocks on lid, lid opens, 3 is annoyed) What?!

2:

What are you doing in that bin?

3:

None of your business! (Slams lid closed. 2 knocks again, louder this time)       What are you, a couple of Mormons?

ALL:

(To audience) Not that there's anything wrong with that!

1:

Look, what's the deal with you in that bin?

3:

It's where I belong. I'm just a load of garbage. My life stinks. I've done so many        rotten things. Everything I touch turns to trash. I can't do anything right.       (Closes lid)

2:

Don't talk rubbish!

3:

(Opens lid) Just leave me alone! I'm waiting for the garbage truck to take me to        the dump where I belong! (Closes lid)

2:

Haven't you ever heard of recycling?

3:

(Lid opens a bit, 3 peeps out) What?

1:

You can get rid of all your garbage and be made new—in fact, better than new.

3:

(In disbelief) Yeah, right! (Slams lid)

1:

I am right. We've been through the recycling process. (Lid opens a bit, 1 talks        into opening) It's fantastic, you should try it! (Lid opens further)

2:

The garbage is gone, we've been washed clean. (Lid right open, 3 looks them        up and down) It's called forgiveness. (Gets the cross)

1:

Why don't you leave your garbage here at the foot of the cross (2 places        cross behind bin) and come with us? (1 and 2 help 3 out of bin)

2:

Now let's get you cleaned up on the outside! (Holds nose) Phew! (All exit)

(This skit could lead directly into a time of confession. People could be encouraged to write down on paper the garbage in their lives that they would like to leave at the foot of the cross, then screw/tear up the paper and put it in the bin)
