DRAMA - PROPER 19, YEAR B

Bible reference: James 2:1-10

TONGUE TWISTED

CHARACTERS: Three puppets: Reporter, Tongue (which can be easily made out of foam cut in the shape of a tongue and painted red) and one other. This play could also be done by people

PROPS:

Microphone for reporter. Puppet stage could be set up as if it was a large TV, could have a bushfire scene on a backdrop, sound FX tape of sirens etc

(Reporter enters)

REPORTER:

I’m here reporting live and on the spot from the scene of yet another terrible fire. This fire has been raging out of control here for some time, causing immense damage and heart-ache. A well-known, convicted arsonist has been accused of sparking off this latest blaze. He is here with me now.

(Mr Tongue enters, reporter turns to face him)

Mr Tongue, you have  been accused of arson, gossiping, slander, libel, defamation of character, offensive behaviour, assault with a deadly weapon, and lying through your teeth?

TONGUE:

I didn’t do it!

REPORTER:

But you were caught red-handed, or at least red-tongued!

TONGUE:

I refuse to say anything on the grounds that it might incriminate me.

REPORTER:

Mr Tongue, do you ever really stop to think about what you should say, before you say it?

TONGUE:

No, mostly I just say the first thing that’s on the tip of my tongue, get it, ‘the tip of my tongue’.

REPORTER:

Well, have you ever thought about (Sarcastically) ‘holding your tongue’?

TONGUE:

No, I hate being ‘tongue tied’.

REPORTER:

(Disgusted) Mr Tongue, you’re really twisted. Don’t you ever worry that people might get hurt?

TONGUE:

No, haven’t you ever heard the saying, ‘Sticks and stones can break your bones, but words will never hurt you’?

REPORTER:

But words can and do hurt people everyday!

TONGUE:

Well, it’s not my fault if they can’t take it! Anyway, it was only a few thoughtless words...

REPORTER:

Mr Tongue, your few thoughtless words have sparked off this huge fire which has destroyed reputations. Some people have lost everything, many people are being treated for injuries to their self-esteem, and some will even be scarred for life! I hope you go to        prison for a very long time. Take him away and gag him, fellas. (Another puppet emerges and drags Tongue off)

TONGUE:

(Off stage) No, no, not the gag, not the gag, mmpff, mmpff, mmpff...

REPORTER:

There you have it, viewers, another tongue has been stopped, but how many more are out there?...(Exit)
