(Phone is on small table in the centre of the stage area)

(Enters, talks to audience) The other night I had a dream, more like a nightmare really. I dreamt that I tried to call God. (Goes over to telephone) I picked up the phone (Picks up receiver) and dialled his number (Dials), and this is what I heard...(Puts receiver to ear)

Thank you for calling God. Please select one of the following numbers.

For complaints, press 1.
For requests, press 2.
For guidance, press 3.
For answers to difficult questions, press 4.
For praise and thanksgiving, press 5.
For your reservations in heaven, press the letters J O H N and the numbers 3 1 6.
For all others items, press 6.
To talk directly to God, press 7.
To hear this message again, press 8.
PERSON:

(To audience) After listening to the message three times to make sure I’d got the numbers right, I pressed 7. I wanted to talk directly to God. (Presses 7 and listens)

Thank you for calling God. Unfortunately, all the lines are busy at the moment. Your call has been placed on hold. You are now in a queue. Your call will be answered in the order in which it was received. Please stay on the line unless you are calling on a Sunday, in which case we suggest you try again on a less busy day. God will be with you as soon as a line becomes available. Have a nice life. (Person looks at receiver in disbelief)

(To audience) After listening to a tinny version of the ‘Hallelujah Chorus’ for over an hour, I hung up. (Hangs up crossly) I tried leaving a message with an answering angel (Sighs), but it wasn’t the same. It made me think, though, maybe we should be making better use of what we have! (Exits)
