DRAMA - FIRST SUNDAY AFTER CHRISTMAS, YEAR C

Bible reference: Colossians 3:12-17

PUT ON LOVE

CHARACTERS:

Madam who is wearing an elegant dressing gown, Jeeves who is dressed as a butler

PROPS:

Elegant looking chair for Madam to sit on.

MADAM:

(Calling impatiently from chair) Jeeves! Jeeves! Where is that dratted man?

JEEVES:       (Entering) Yes, Madam? You bellowed?

MADAM:       (Annoyed) Yes I did, have you laid out my clothes for today?

JEEVES:        Yes, Madam, they're all ready and waiting.

MADAM:       (Irritably) I hope you're not expecting me to wear love again.

JEEVES:        Actually, Madam, I'm afraid I am.

MADAM:       (Gets up and paces) Well, I wanted to wear impatience today.

JEEVES:

(Rolling eyes) Yes, Madam, I can see that, but you've been wearing it a lot lately so I sent it to the cleaners. Anyway, you're supposed to put on love every day.

MADAM:

(Frustrated) Look, I can't be expected to wear love all the time. Couldn't I wear something else for a change? What about the jealousy ensemble?

JEEVES:        Green is definitely not Madam's colour.

MADAM:        Pride?

JEEVES:        Makes your nose look rather . . . stuck up.

MADAM:        Anger?

JEEVES:        The red makes your face go blotchy.

MADAM:        Hatred?

JEEVES:       (Shaking head) Doesn't do a thing for you.

MADAM:        Not even a teeny weeny touch of dislike or unkindness?

JEEVES:       (Patiently) They'll clash with the love.

MADAM:       (Sitting down petulantly) But it's such a demanding outfit to wear!

JEEVES:

(Flattering her) I know, Madam, but it looks so good on you. It really does bring out all your best features.

MADAM:       (Pleased and flattered) You think so?

JEEVES:        I know so. Ask anybody, love really suits you.

MADAM:

(Still doubtful) You don't think people will get bored seeing me wear the same old thing day after day?

JEEVES:

No, Madam, I'm sure they look forward to seeing you wearing it. (To audience) I know I certainly do.

MADAM:        They do?

JEEVES:

(Trying to tempt her) Yes, Madam, and it comes with all those lovely accessories: compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness, patience and forgiveness.

MADAM:

(Thoughtfully) Yes, it does, doesn't it.

JEEVES:

The whole outfit really makes for a rather stunning effect.

MADAM:

(Still doubtful) You don't think it's too much?

JEEVES:

(Through gritted teeth) No, Madam. (Encouragingly) Just think of the effect it'll have on others.

MADAM:

Maybe you're right. (Stands) Very well, I will put on love today. (Jeeves turns towards audience, clasps hands together, looks up and mouths 'thankyou') What was that?

JEEVES:

Nothing, Madam. Now let's get you dressed. (Starts guiding her off stage)

MADAM:

Why all the rush, you silly man?

JEEVES:

(Guiding her off) The sooner we you get into that outfit, the better!

(Both exit)
