DRAMA - CHRISTMAS PROPER I, YEAR C

Bible reference: Isaiah 9:2-7

 

A LIGHT HAS DAWNED

 

CHARACTERS: Four readers, Mary, Joseph, shepherds, Jesus

 

PROPS: Manger, wooden cross standing upright

 

(The manger scene and the cross are set up on opposite sides of the stage area. The readers enter and stand between the two scenes in a line, 1 standing closest to the manger scene. The song suggestions are optional; other suitable songs could be sung )

 

READERS: The people walking in darkness have seen a great light; (Spotlight on manger scene with Mary and Joseph and Jesus in a manger)

On those living in the land of the shadow a light has dawned.

 

(Shepherds enter and kneel to worship at the manger while an optional song 'Mary's Child' verse 1 and 2 is sung. During song, readers 2, 3 and 4 group together on the opposite side of the stage area to reader I and the manger scene)

 

1:        For unto us a child is born,

 

2:        And he must die! (Spotlight on cross)

 

1:        To us a son is given,

 

3:        And we will crucify him!

 

1:        And the government will be on his shoulders.

 

4:        And he will bear the punishment for our sins.

 

1:        And he will be called

 

2:       (Jesus enters, 2 indicates him sneering) 'The King of the Jews'!

 

1:        Wonderful Counsellor,

 

3 & 4:       (Pointing accusingly at Jesus) Blasphemer!

 

1:        Mighty God,

 

2, 3 & 4:       (Advancing on Jesus) Crucify him!

 

1:        Everlasting Father,

 

2, 3 & 4:       (Grabbing Jesus) Crucify him!

 

1:        Prince of Peace.

 

2, 3, & 4:       (Putting Jesus on cross) Crucify him!

 

1:

Of the increase of his government and peace there will be no end. (While I speaks, 2, 3 and 4 back away from the cross, leaving Jesus hanging there)

 

2:

(2, 3 and 4 turn their backs on Jesus) We will despise and reject the one who came to save us. (Optional singing of 'Mary's Child' verse 3)

 

1:        He will reign on David's throne

 

3:        He will hang on a wooden cross.

 

1:        And over his kingdom,

 

4:        And he will die for his people.

 

1:        Establishing and upholding it with justice and righteousness.

 

2:

(While 3 and 4 take Jesus down from cross and lay him on the floor in front of the cross) We will place his body in a tomb.

 

1:        From that time on and forever.

 

3:

(2, 3 & 4 move to stand in front of Jesus' body) And close it with a heavy stone. (Spotlight on cross fades out)

 

1:        The zeal of the Lord Almighty will accomplish this.

 

2, 3 & 4:

(Moving to stand in original position near 1) And he will rise again! (Spotlight goes on to show Jesus standing, smiling, arms outstretched in typical resurrection pose in front of cross)

 

1:

The people walking in darkness have seen a great light! (Shepherds, Mary and Joseph leave manger scene and kneel at the feet of Jesus, spotlight on manger scene fades out)

 

READERS:

(Triumphantly) On those living in the land of the shadow of death a light has dawned! (Readers join others kneeling at Jesus' feet. Optional singing of verse 2 and 4 of 'Mary's Child'. All exit)
