DRAMA - NEW YEAR, YEAR C

Bible reference: Ecclesiastes 3:1-13

I HAVE TIME

CHARACTERS: 5 people, plus extra people to rush about in the background

(People, including 1, 2 and 3, enter and rush around looking busy)

1:

(Walks to front of stage area) Stop! (People in background freeze)

2:

(Walks to front of stage area) Wait!

3:

(Walks to front of stage area) Slow down, I can't keep up!

4:

(Walks across front of stage, with mechanical, rigid movements) Gotta have more time. Gotta have more time. Gotta have more time.

5:

(Walks across front of stage from opposite direction, with mechanical, rigid movements) Time, time, time. Not enough time, time, time. Not enough time.

4:

(Walks back across front of stage, with mechanical, rigid movements) Gotta have more time. Gotta have more time. Gotta have more time.

5:

(Walks back across front of stage, with mechanical, rigid movements) Time, time, time. Not enough time, time, time. Not enough time.

3:

(Defeated, desperate, looking for help) I'll never get there. I haven't time!

1:

(Sarcastic, cynical) I can't think! I can't read! I'm swamped. I haven't time!

2:

(Angry, frustrated) I can't wait. I'll come back. I haven't time!

1:

The hours are too short.

2:

The days are too short.

3:

Oh God! Our lives are too short!

2:

I can't finish all the things for today, let alone worry about tomorrow.

1:

Our modern life has so many labour-saving devices, so why haven't we got time?

3:

(Looking up) Look at us, Lord, walking running hurrying after time . . .

2:

(Looking up) . . . over-burdened, hassled, frantic . . .

1:

(Looking up . . . rushing not to waste time, to catch up with time, to gain time.

4:

(Walks back across front of stage) Gotta have more time. Gotta have more time. Gotta have more time.

5:

(Walks back across front of stage) Time, time, time. Not enough time, time, time. Not enough time.

3:

Lord, you must've made a mistake in your calculations. There's a big mistake somewhere.

1:

With all our efforts, we're still short of time. Where's the answer, Lord? (1, 2, 3 relax together and change from rigid poses to peaceful, as if God is talking to them. The background remains frozen)

3:

Yes, Lord, it's when we stop struggling and relax in the quietness of your presence that we may hear the sweet softness of your voice speaking to us.

2:

You, who are beyond time, Lord, you see us fighting it. You know what you are doing. You make no mistake in your distribution of time. You give each person time to do what you want them to do.

1:

Heavenly Father, thank you for the gift of time you have given to each of us. That gift of time we call life. (Background comes to life and in rushing movements people gradually leave the stage area, until only 1,2 and 3 remain standing peacefully)

4:

(Walks back across front of stage) Gotta have more time. Gotta have more time. Gotta have more time.

5:

(Walks back across front of stage) Time, time, time. Not enough time, time, time. Not enough time.

3:

Lord, I have time. I have plenty of time. All the time you give me.

2:

All the years of my life.

1:

All the days of my years.

3:

All the hours of my days, they are all mine.

2:

Mine to fill quietly, calmly, but to fill to the brim. To offer them to you that you may change them from insipid water to rich wine, like you once did in Cana of Galilee.

3:

But we must not lose time, waste time, kill time. For time is a gift you give us, but it is a perishable gift. A gift that will not keep.

1:

Lord, I'm not asking for time to do this and that, but your grace to do it conscientiously, to do what you want me to do in the time you give me.

(1,2 and 3 turn to walk away, but then turn back to the audience)

1:

Who controls your time?

3:

Have you time for God?

2:

God has time for you. (All exit)
