(3 Pentecost, 24 June 2001)

ROCKIN' WITH SSV

CHARACTERS: Nathan, Matt, Lennie and James

(Nathan, Matt and Lennie walk onto stage and wait by some prominent object,eg pulpit, lectern. Lennie is looking over his shoulder in a state of rapture)

NATHAN:

(Looking around) Hey, where's James?

MATT:

Good question, I thought he was here.

NATHAN:

It's just as well we organised to meet here by this (Looks around him quizzically) . . . um . . . lectern (Insert appropriate prominent object). He'll rock up if we just wait a bit.

LENNIE:

(Rapturously) Wow! That was the best concert I've ever been to!

MATT:

(Enthusiastically) Yeah, wasn't it great? The effects were amazing! You could really feel the heat from those jets of fire.

NATHAN:

I think my eyebrows might be singed. (Laughs)

MATT:

No, I'm serious. It was really impressive. I mean I really felt something.

LENNIE:

I know what you mean.  I don't know how they did that bit where the whole stadium seemed to be shaking, but I could feel it here in my chest. (Thumps chest)

MATT:

And the bass was going BOOM, BOOM, BOOM, (Thumps chest with each word) and it seemed to beat right through you.

NATHAN:

It was pretty spectacular.

MATT:

It felt more than that . . . It felt . . . well, I know this sounds stupid, but it felt almost (Trying to describe it . . . spiritual.

LENNIE:

Yes, yes, that's it! And they kept repeating that riff over and over and over again. I still can't get it out of my head.

MATT:

And those huge fans at the back were amazing. I felt like I was being pushed up to the stage. I have to order the CD.

NATHAN:

(Coming back down to earth) Look, guys, I went to SSV's concert last year, and like you I thought it was pretty incredible. I was so excited I mail-ordered the CD from the States. It finally arrived about two months later, but when I played it again it all seemed a bit hollow without all the stage effects.

LENNIE:

Then why did you come back and see them again?

NATHAN:

Well, the effects ARE amazing.

MATT:

Yeah, I'm still going to order in the CD, I don't care what you say, Nathan.

JAMES:

(Enters looking excited) Hey, guys! Thanks for waiting. Man, that was amazing!

LENNIE:

(Animatedly) I know what you mean!

JAMES:

It really felt like I'd heard something.

LENNIE:

Yes! Yes! Yes!

MATT:

SSV rock the planet!  I still can't get over that fire.

NATHAN:

Pretty impressive effects, hey, James?

JAMES:

What?  No, no, I wasn't talking about them at all.

LENNIE:

(Somewhat stunned) What did you say?

JAMES:

No, no, no. I thought SSV were hopeless. Their music was repetitive and simplistic. It was sentimental and unoriginal. Their effects were sensational and showy and aimed to get a quick and easy reaction out of the audience. In fact, I can't think of any redeeming features about their performance.

LENNIE:

(Still in shock) What?

MATT:

You can't be serious?

NATHAN:

No . . . that's just how I felt last year, only I couldn't find the words to express it so well.

MATT:

Well, what were you raving about then, if it was so bad?

JAMES:

After you left, I couldn't find my bag, so I was looking under all the seats and the cleaner came in and started singing. HE was amazing.  His had this incredible soft voice that seemed to whisper to me. I couldn't help but sit and listen to him.

LENNIE:

(Can't believe this) What?

MATT:

(Grumpy now) We'd better go get a taxi. (They begin to leave)

JAMES:

It was so unexpected.

NATHAN:

(As they leave) SSV! What a load of showy performers. I mean, what does SSV stand for, anyway?! (All exit)
