PRAYER OF THE DAY (COLLECT)

O Lord, since you never fail to help and guide

those whom you bring up in your fear and love:

Give us continual fear and love

for your holy name;

through your Son,

Jesus Christ our Lord,

who lives and reigns

with you and the Holy Spirit,

one God, now and forever.

Amen.

OR, modernised traditional

Lord, you never fail to help and guide

those you bring up in your love.

Lead us always

to worship and love your holy name.

Jesus Christ our Lord,

who lives and reigns

with you and the Holy Spirit,

one God, now and forever.

Amen.

OR, new (revised alternative)

(Let us pray for daily renewal. [silence])

Thank you, Lord God,

that you have cleansed us from sin

and saved us from the power of the enemy

through the death and resurrection of your Son.

Keep us drowning our sinful self

by repenting day after day,

and bring to life in us each day

a new self to live with you forever.

We ask this through Jesus Christ our Lord,

who lives and reigns

with you and the Holy Spirit,

one God, now and forever.

Amen.

FIRST READING AND PSALM

Note: There are two sets of first readings (with accompanying Psalms) given for the Sundays after Pentecost: (a) a new semi-continuous set, and (b) a set related thematically to the gospels (as in the earlier form of the lectionary). It is intended that either one of these two sets be used throughout and that they not be mixed.

to other people.

Use us and our possessions for your service.

PRAYER OF THE CHURCH

Call to prayer

When our Lord saw the widow whose only son had died, he had compassion on her. Let us bring all our needs to our compassionate God.

Response

Lord, in your mercy,

hear our prayer.

Suggested intercessions

*

for the church, that it would continue to boldly preach the gospel of God's acceptance for Christ's sake to all people

*

that the church would bring the comfort of God's compassion to all who are suffering or grieving

*

that governments would protect the innocent and help their citizens in need

*

for all who are persecuted for preaching God's word

*

for all who have lost someone near and dear to them

*

for all children who are sick, and for their parents

Response

Lord, in your mercy,

hear our prayer.

Suggested intercessions

God of comfort, in mercy listen to all our cries for help. Assure us that you are always with us; through your Son, Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever.

Amen.

PREFACE

It is indeed right and good,

Lord God, holy Father,

that we should at all times and in all places

give thanks to you,

through Jesus Christ our Lord.

(On this day)*

he overcame death by his resurrection

and opened up for us

the way to eternal life with you.

And so, with angels and archangels,

and with all the company of heaven,

we adore and praise your glorious name:

* The words 'on this day' are used only on Sundays.

COMMUNION INVITATION

For a choice of communion invitations, see the document 'General notes and resources', under 'Communion invitation', in the 'General and seasonal' folder.

PRAYER AFTER COMMUNION

See the service order for a standard post-communion prayer. Alternatively, use the third prayer of the day (as listed above) at this point. It may be modified as follows.

Thank you, Lord God,

that you have cleansed us from sin

through the death and resurrection of your Son

and have assured us of your forgiveness

in this healing sacrament.

Keep us drowning our sinful self

by repenting day after day,

and bring to life in us each day

a new self to live with you forever.

We ask this through Jesus Christ our Lord,

who lives and reigns

with you and the Holy Spirit,

one God, now and forever.

Amen.

DISMISSAL

Go in peace. The Lord has power even to raise the dead.

Thanks be to God. OR In the name of Christ. Amen.

PSALM 146

For musical settings of Psalm 146, see Music Packages 6, 9 and 10.

TIS 90, I'll praise my maker while I've breath, is a paraphrase of Psalm 146:1,2,5-9. Or, either of the following paraphrases of the psalm by David Sch¸tz may be used. If reproducing either of these versions, please put 'Words (c) David Sch¸tz' at the beginning or the end of the psalm. The first may be sung to the tune Adelaide, LH 461.

As long as I have breath,

I'll sing my praise to God:

O praise the Lord, my soul!

Don't trust in human strength,

in whom there is no help.

O praise the Lord, my soul!

When mortal breath is gone,

and strength returns to dust,

      all human plans will end;

but Jacob's God keeps faith -

he made the earth and sky

      and all that they contain!

He gives the hungry food,

and justice to the poor

      and sets the prisoners free.

The righteous know his love.

He lifts up those weighed down,

and makes the blind to see.

He cares for refugees,

for widows, orphans too,

but all who hate him fall!

Forever Zion's God

is King of all the earth,

O praise the Lord, my soul!

This second version may be sung to the tune of 'Now the green blade rises' (LHS 764, AT 15, TIS 382).

Verses1-4

Praise the Lord, my soul! I'll praise him all my days.

Trust no human leader - mortals bring no aid.

Their breath departs, their bodies turn to dust,

all their plans will perish, as all creatures must.

Verses 5,6

Blest are those who find their help in Jacob's God.

Blest are those whose hope is in the Lord their God.

He made the sky, the sea, and all the earth.

He is always faithful, always keeps his word.

Verses 7,8

The Lord feeds the hungry, sets the prisoner free,

by his healing power the blind are made to see,

he gives his justice to all those oppressed,

lifts up those bowed down, and loves all righteousness.

Verses 9.10

Strangers, widows, orphans know his loving grace.

But he brings to ruin every wicked way.

The Lord will reign forever, Zion's God.

Through all generations, praise the Lord our God!

PSALM 30

For musical settings of Psalm 30, see Music Packages 4, 6, 8 and 9. For another setting of selected verses, see TIS 18 I will praise you, Lord.

The following paraphrase of Psalm 30 by David Sch¸tz may be sung to the tune Bethany ('Nearer my God to thee', LHS 872). If reproducing this version, please put 'Words (c) David Sch¸tz' at the beginning or the end of the psalm.

I will exalt you, Lord;

you rescued me

from the deep grave of death

that threatened me.

You did not let my foes

gloat over me in death;

I called to you for help,

you spared my life.

Sing to the Lord, you saints,

and praise his name.

Weeping may last the night,

joy comes with dawn.

His anger is so short,

his favour is so long!

So I rejoice in him,

singing my song.

Feeling secure, I said:

'I shan't be moved!'

But when you hid your face,

I was dismayed!

To you, O Lord, I called;

'Have mercy!' was my cry.

'What gain is there for you,

if I should die?'

'How can I praise you, Lord,

if I am dust?

How, from the grave, can I

speak of your trust?

Hear and be merciful!

O Lord, come to my aid!'

I called to God for help,

and I was saved.

You turned my mournful tears,

into a dance.

You stripped me of my grief,

robed me with joy!

I will not hold my tongue!

Now I, with all my heart,

sing songs of thanks to you,

O Lord, my God.

VISUAL

VISUALS FOR THE READINGS

Pictures or visual symbols could be displayed on banners or the overhead screen during the readings.

DRAMA

'MEGA DRAMA'

See a drama for the day in Mega Drama resources (Openbook Publishers), originally included in these worship resources when they were released on disks.

DRAMATISING THE READINGS

The readings can be read by more than one person to make the dramatic meaning of the text clearer. For instance, the first reading (1a) from 1 Kings 17:8-16(17-24) could be read by four readers: the narrator, the Lord, Elijah, the widow; the first reading (1b) from 1 Kings 17:17-24 by three readers:the narrator, the widow, Elijah; and the gospel by three readers: the narrator (pastor), Jesus, one of the people.

CHILDREN

TALKING WITH THE CHILDREN

Talk about how God cares for us when we are sad, and how he looks after us - as in the story of the gospel for today.
