GONE FISHING — AT THE MALL
Puppet play for one puppet and person. Puppet is dressed and equipped for fishing. Puppet is ‘fishing’ at the mall. Enter person looking for him.
PERSON: Oh, here you are!
PUPPET: Hi there!
PERSON: What are you doing? I went to your house and I found a strange note on the door: ‘Gone fishing at the mall.’ Well, I didn’t believe it, but now that I’m here you do have your fishing gear. What are you doing?
PUPPET: Fishing!
PERSON: Yes, I can see that, but why are you fishing at the mall?
PUPPET: God told me to.
PERSON: God told you to?
PUPPET: Yes — in the Bible.
PERSON: In the Bible?
PUPPET: Uh-huh.
PERSON: It doesn’t say in the Bible that you should go fishing at the mall.
PUPPET: Oh yes, it does. The other puppets and I were reading our Bibles...
PERSON: The other puppets are doing this too?
PUPPET: Sure are. We’re all fishing at the mall.
PERSON: So where are the others?
PUPPET: Well, we weren’t having much luck so some of them have gone to try over by the escalators.
PERSON: And the rest?
PUPPET: They’ve gone to get some more bait. We weren’t catching anything with the doughnuts so they’ve gone to get some chocolate.
PERSON: You’ll never catch any fish using chocolate for bait.
PUPPET: I know that. But we’re not trying to catch fish, we’re trying to catch people.
PERSON: Now I’m really confused.
PUPPET: It’s simple. Let me explain it to you. Yesterday we were reading our Bibles and we were looking at Matthew chapter 4. Jesus said to his disciples, ‘Come and follow me, and I will make you fishers of people.’ Now you’re always telling us that we need to put God’s word into practice — right?
PERSON: Right.
PUPPET: So here we are trying to catch some people for Jesus. But we’re not having much success.
PERSON: I see. Well, I think that maybe the others are on the right track. I think you’ve got the wrong bait.
PUPPET: Do you think that chocolate will do the trick?
PERSON: Well, no ... not exactly. Look, if you want to catch people for Jesus, the bait that you need is the good news about God’s love that’s in the Bible.
PUPPET: You mean I should stick pages of the Bible onto my hook. I don’t think people will want to eat that.
PERSON: No, you’re right. But when Jesus says that you’ll be fishers of people — it’s a metaphor.
PUPPET: A meta-4! Wow, I hadn’t even heard of a meta-1. What’s this meta-4 do?
PERSON: It doesn’t do anything. A metaphor is a picture that helps us to understand something important. When Jesus says ‘you will be fishers of people’ he means that the people who follow him will have an important job — to tell other people about God’s love and about Jesus so that they’ll follow him too.
PUPPET: Oh. So no fishing lines and no doughnuts or chocolate.
PERSON: Well, no fishing lines in the mall, anyway. But you could certainly talk about Jesus when you went fishing with a friend, and doughnuts and chocolate are a great way to show God’s love and friendship to someone.
PUPPET: Hey! I’ve got an idea. I could invite someone to our Sunday school/Kids Club/Christmas service/Holiday Bible Club... That way I’d be giving them a chance to learn about God’s love.
PERSON: Great idea!
PUPPET: I’ll go and do that right now. Bye.
