DRAMA—SECOND SUNDAY IN LENT, YEAR B
Bible reference: Mark 8:34-38
ALL OR NOTHING!
CHARACTERS: Person, voice of God.
(Person enters and stands centre stage)
PERSON:
(Smugly) I'm a committed Christian.
GOD:
(Voice only, person jumps) Do you realise that I made you? I've given you everything you have? What are you going to commit to me?
PERSON:
(Pulls out wallet) Let me see... (Looking in wallet) I've got five, ten, twenty... twenty dollars. Now, ten per cent of that is two dollars. (Showing God two dollar coin) I can give you two dollars. I'll need the rest to buy some milk and bread.
GOD:
Two dollars? I require more than that. I want the whole twenty dollars.
PERSON:
(Gulps) OK... I guess it's all yours anyway.
GOD:
Now, how much money have you got in the bank?
PERSON:
(Proudly) I have ten thousand dollars in the bank.
GOD:
Good, ten thousand dollars. What else?
PERSON:
(Shocked) What else? You want the whole ten thousand dollars? That's all the money I've got!
GOD:
Yes, I'm quite sure you wouldn't have it if it wasn't for me. What else do you have?
PERSON:
(Throwing up hands) That's it, ten thousand and twenty dollars!
PERSON:
I live in my house.
GOD:
Ah, then I'll take the house too.
PERSON:
Oh, (Trying to make the best of it) then I'll have to live in the garage.
GOD:
You've got a garage! I'll have that too. What else?
PERSON:
(Can't believe this) Do you mean I have to live in my car?
PERSON:
(Cautiously) I've got two.
GOD:
Both are mine, both cars. What else?
PERSON:
(Crossly) You've got the house, the garage, the cars, the money, everything!
PERSON:
I've got nothing else!
GOD:
Are you alone in the world?
PERSON:
(Wondering where this is leading) No, I have a wife and two children...
GOD:
Your wife and your children too.
PERSON:
(Worried) Them too?
GOD:
Yes, everything you have. What else?
PERSON:
(Feeling sorry for him/herself) I have nothing else, I'm all alone now...
GOD:
Oh, you too. Everything. Everything is mine: wife, children, house, garage, cars, money, clothing, everything... and you too.
PERSON:
(Really worried) You're taking everything? It's all yours?
GOD:
(Pleased) Good, you've finally got the message.
PERSON:
(Panicking) But what can I do? I've got nothing left!
GOD:
Wrong, you've got me. I'm your creator, I'm your owner, I'm your God. My Son gave everything to save you.
PERSON:
But how can I live? You've got everything!
GOD:
Everything belongs to me, but you can use them.
PERSON:
(Surprised) I can?
GOD:
Yes! Just use them wisely, as I intend, to serve others.
