DRAMA - SECOND SUNDAY OF ADVENT, YEAR C

Bible reference: Luke 3:1-6

PREPARE!

CHARACTERS: Elizabeth (obviously very pregnant), Doctor, Nurse

PROPS:        Two desks, three chairs, stethoscope, optional partition

(Nurse is seated at reception desk on one side of the stage area. The doctor is seated at his/her desk in his/her 'office' on the other side of the stage area. They could be separated by a partition to indicate that the doctor's office is another room)

ELIZABETH:

(Enters) Hi, I'm here for a check-up.

NURSE:

Again?

DOCTOR:

(Calling from office) Next!

NURSE:

Oh, come through. (Takes Elizabeth through to doctor)

DOCTOR:

(Surprised) Elizabeth! You're not due in again till next week.

ELIZABETH:

(Sitting down) I was just worried.

DOCTOR:

Hmm . . . I doubt anything's going to be different than yesterday.

ELIZABETH:

Well, I want everything to be perfect for him. Everything has to be just right.

DOCTOR:

Look, apart from your age this is all a perfectly normal pregnancy. There's nothing to worry about.

ELIZABETH:

I've been having these weird food cravings.

DOCTOR:

(Reassuring) Quite normal.

ELIZABETH:

For locusts and honey?

DOCTOR:

Well . . . most health food shops, if you just ask . . .

ELIZABETH:

And I've been having these strange urges to wear camel hair clothes and go for a trip to the desert. You know, that camel hair doesn't half itch!

NURSE:

That's just the hormones, dear. (Getting out stethoscope)

ELIZABETH:

And my husband's no help, just keeps writing notes about calling him John. I feel like calling him Patrick just to spite him!

NURSE:

(Applying stethoscope to Elizabeth's belly) How about Dylan?

DOCTOR:

(Ignoring nurse) I'm sure he's doing the best he can.

ELIZABETH:

Normally I'd call my cousin, but she's got her own problems. She's expecting too, and she's having visions.

NURSE:

(Searching for baby's heartbeat) Jesse, that's a nice name.

ELIZABETH:

I keep worrying about what the future will bring.

DOCTOR:

(Patting Elizabeth's hand) Now, you just concentrate on the present and let the future sort itself out.

ELIZABETH:

He's kicking all the time now, he wants to come out.

NURSE:

(Listening to stethoscope and frowning) That's odd.

DOCTOR:

What?

NURSE:

(Passing stethoscope to doctor) Doctor, I think you should listen to this.

ELIZABETH:

(Getting worried) What? What's wrong?

DOCTOR:

(Listening) I think he . . . is . . . ready to come out.

ELIZABETH:

How can you tell?

DOCTOR:

I can hear this little voice saying, 'Prepare! Prepare!'

NURSE:

(Cheerfully) Looks like it's time to prepare for the birth of the baby.

ELIZABETH:

Oh no! I'm not ready! (Stands up and rushes off saying) Prepare! Prepare! Prepare! (Nurse and doctor exit smiling and shaking heads)
