DRAMA - THIRD SUNDAY IN LENT, YEAR C

Bible reference: 1 Corinthians 10:1-13

GOING WITH THE FLOW

CHARACTERS: Two narrators, Jeffrey, Jake, Josie

PROPS: Carboard cut-out car (large enough for three people) and tree

(Narrators enter)

1:

Jeffrey was a hunk of a guy, who grew up in a Christian home. His parents taught him all the things that parents need to teach. They took him to church. They made him feel special. They welcomed his friends with open arms.

2:

But then, Jeffrey turned 18.

1:

Now 18 is not a good age to be. It's full of disruption.

2:

And hormones.

1:

And questions about the future.

2:

And hormones.

1:

And study.

2:

And hormones.

1:

And cars.

2:

And hormones.

1:

And temptations.

2:

And hormones.

1:

And the list goes on.

2:

And so do the hormones! (Jake enters and stands looking 'out of it'. Jeffrey enters driving a cardboard cut-out car, making car noises)

1:

One day while Jeffrey was out for a drive he noticed one of his best friends, Jake, standing on the side of the road. Jeffrey said 'Hi' (Jeffrey mouths 'Hi', waves at Jake), to which Jake responded...

JAKE:

(Waving happily) Hiiiiiiiii.

2:

Jake was as high as a kite.

1:

Jeffrey briefly considered all the issues that were taking place in his life (Adopts thoughtful pose), and asked Jake what he was doing. Jake said . . .

JAKE:        (Smoking an imaginary joint) I'm smoking, man.

2:        And he offered Jeffrey a joint. (Jake does so)

1:

Jeffrey briefly considered whether or not he should succumb to this temptation. (Adopts thoughtful pose)

2:

Then he decided to go with the flow. (Jeffrey takes joint and starts smoking it)

1:

After a quick puff, or four, or twenty-four, Jeffrey could also see the psychedelic armadillo Jake was carrying. (Jake suddenly sees imaginary armadillo and points to it)

2:

So Jeffrey and Jake took it for a drive. (Jake gets into car they drive a bit further making car noises. Josie enters)

1:

Around the corner they met Josie,

2:

the cutest girl in town. (Josie waves at them)

1:

They cruised up to her. (They do so)

JEFF:

(Airily, leaning out of car) You want to go for a drive?

2:

Jeffrey asked in a voice that suggested his brain was far away

1:

Josie briefly considered whether or not she should succumb to this temptation. (Adopts thoughtful pose) Then she decided to go with the flow. She nodded a quick reply, (Josie nods, takes imaginary joint from Jeffrey, who hands it to her, and smokes it) had a puff, (Josie gets into car)

2:

and shared the back seat with the psychedelic armadillo. (Josie shakes hands with imaginary armadillo)

1:

Before long the psychedelic armadillo spoke. 'What are you guys up to?'  he enquired. They airily replied . . .

JAKE,

JEFFREY &

JOSIE: (To imaginary armadillo) Man, we dunno, we're just going with the flow.

2:

Then they smashed into a tree. (Car crashes into cardboard cut-out tree with sound FX of crashing etc. Jeffrey, Jake and Josie and car lie in a heap)

1:

Which just goes to show . . .

2:

(Proudly) You should beware of psychedelic armadillos!

1:

(To 2) No! (To audience) It's not always good to go with the flow.

2:

And give into temptation.

1 & 2:

There are times when you need to stand firm. (They exit)
