DRAMA - PROPER 8, YEAR C

Bible reference: Galatians 5:13-25

(4 Pentecost, 1 July 2001)

CAN'T YOU PICK SOMETHING EASIER?

CHARACTERS: Three people

PROPS: Table covered with paper, pens, three chairs

(Three people are sitting around a table as if at a meeting. The table is covered with bits of paper and screwed-up bits of paper)

1:

(Getting a new piece of paper) OK, now we have to write a drama script on the fruit of the Spirit.

2:

(Scratching head) That's a tough one, can't you pick something easier?

3:

You mean like helping, praying, preaching, and teaching and stuff?

1:

(Patiently) Those are the gifts of the Spirit, this is the fruit of the Spirit. You know (Writes them down as he/she says them) love, joy , peace, patience, kindness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control and the other 'ness' I always forget.

3:

(Helpfully) Helpfulness?

2:

(Chipping in) Willingness?

3:

Hopefulness?

2:

Forgetfulness?

1:

(Trying to think) If you'd just be quiet a let me think! . . . (Remembers) I remember now, it's goodness. (Writes it down)

3:

So what are we trying to say in this drama?

2:

Are you sure we can't pick an easier text?

1:

(Glaring at 2) We're saying that (Thinking hard) . . . that we all need the fruits of the Spirit. (Jots it down)

3:

But haven't we all got the fruits of the Sprit, if we've got the Spirit? (1 crosses out what has just been jotted down)

2:

So if we've all got the fruits of the Spirit, why am I so I'm hopeless at them? (Frustrated) Especially patience. This may come as a shock to you, but I'm not a very patient person. (Other two pretend to looked shocked) Is it my fault that I'm not using my patience?

1:

(Self-righteously) You need to ask the Holy Spirit to give you patience.

3:

No, you've already got it, you need to ask the Holy Spirit to help you use it.

2:

(Struggling) But what about non-Christians? I know some really nice people. I've got this friend who is the most patient and loving person I know. She oozes kindness and gentleness, and all the other 'ness'es. She puts me to shame! Has she got the fruits of the Spirit?

3:

Yeah, what makes a Christian different to non-Christians?

2:

I told you we should try writing an easier drama.

1:

(Trying to come up with an answer) Christians are different because . . . for them those things come from the Spirit.

3:

Well, how do other people get those things then?

1:

They're just naturally good at them I guess, just their personality.

2:

(Gloomily) I've seen plenty of Christians that aren't naturally good at them at all!

1:

(Ignoring 2) The other thing is that they rely on themselves, but Christians rely on God.

3:

(Has a sudden inspiration) And for us it's a package deal!

2:

A package deal?

3:

Yeah, we've got all of the fruits of the Spirit, through the Holy Spirit. They might only be good at some of them.

2:

(In despair) But I'm not good at any of them!

3:

It's not about you and what you're good at or not, it's what the Holy Spirit can do in you, if you let him.

1:

(Screwing up paper, getting another one) So what's the answer? How do we say all this in a drama?

3:

I've got no idea. Let's go home and pray that Pastor preaches a good sermon on it.

2:

Let's do an easier drama next time! (All exit)
